Intel Confirms and Denies x86-64 Processors
December 30th, 2003 -
"The worlds No.1 chipmaker this week reportedly confirmed existence of its own 64-bit x86 microprocessor, but then denied the reality of any Intel s x86-64 CPU, when asked for clarification."

Chaintech's Zenith ZNF3-150
December 30th, 2003 -
"FOR A WHILE there, the Socket 754 motherboard market looked a little bleak. Although AMD launched the platform with its 754-pin Athlon 64 processors way back in September, it didn''t look like motherboard manufacturers were in any hurry to adopt the platform. Honestly, I don''t blame them; with only a $400 Athlon 64 3200+ available at launch, the Socket 754 platform was initially a very expensive upgrade, even without the cost of a new motherboard. However, AMD''s $200 Athlon 64 3000+ has quickly made the Socket 754 platform an affordable option for PC enthusiasts and gamers alike.

As the Athlon 64 becomes more affordable, now is the perfect time to check out Chaintech''s Socket 754 Zenith ZNF3-150. Like Chaintech''s early Zenith boards, the ZNF3-150 is loaded with integrated peripherals, bundled extras, and a decent array of overclocking options. However, this latest Zenith is quite a bit cheaper than Chaintech''s previous high-end offerings, making the ZNF3-150 especially tempting for anyone looking for an AMD64 bargain.

Has Chaintech kept the peripheral and bundle gravy train flowing, despite the ZNF3-150''s more affordable price tag? Can the board''s nForce3 chipset, with a little help from NVIDIA''s latest Forceware drivers, keep up with VIA''s K8T800 chipset? Read on; you might be surprised."

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
December 30th, 2003 -
"We tested a new AMD processor based on AMD64 architecture and targeted for the mainstream market. The major advantage of this processor is the price, which is just slightly above $200, while the performance is very nice. Let s find out if this new attractive offer from AMD can compete successfully with the rivalry products."

Power-Color Radeon 9200SE
December 27th, 2003 - A new review over at OCModShop digs into the Power-Color Radeon 9200SE; is this card worth a look?

"The card has a VGA, DVI, and RCA out connection which is pretty nice for a low end card. Because this card is designed to be low profile you have the option to make the card smaller by moving or removing the VGA connection. On most cases there is a cutout there you can mount the VGA port if you need to make the card low profile. If you do not need the VGA at all you can then just remove it."

Shuttle's FB54 motherboard
December 27th, 2003 - Shuttle swerves from the norm they have established with the XPC line, and Tech-Report has the scoop...

"SHUTTLE HAS been pushing small form factor PCs for years with its XPC line of barebones systems, but the infectious little cubes have their limitations. For starters, the cube form factor is largely incompatible with home entertainment system furniture. Shuttle''s cubes are also designed to work with standard desktop hard disks, optical drives, and AGP cards, making them quite a bit bigger than systems using 2.5" laptop hard disks, slim optical drives, and integrated video.

To cater to small form factor enthusiasts looking to build systems in something other than one of its XPC cubes, Shuttle has rolled out a tiny Flex ATX board called the FB54. Just two centimeters wider than VIA''s diminutive EPIA Mini ITX boards, the FB54 should be compatible with a good number of Mini ITX cases. However, rather than relying on VIA''s cool-but-slow C3 processor, the FB54 can accommodate a Pentium 4 processor on a 533MHz front-side bus.

With support for processors as fast as the P4 3.06GHz Hyper-Threading included the FB54 could unlock all sorts of possibilities for home-theater PCs and other small form factor systems. Is the FB54 worth its extra girth over VIA''s Mini ITX EPIA M10000? Read on to find out."

Stuff, and stuff
December 22nd, 2003 - In case you hadn''t noticed there are an exceptionally large number of line breaks in the news. Well, this is only a temporary issue until I get the new CMS in place. A lot of things will be changing around here, while the core feel will remain very much the same.

I''m shooting to integrate the forum and primary user accounts, fix the Photo Gallery, and updated approximately 5,000 other things along with an entirely new look/feel based on the current theme.

So there you have it, FT is in the midst of some changes so I do apologize for the weirdness you might see popping up.

AMD's 90nm Processors to Dissipate 105W?
December 17th, 2003 - The word is that Intel isn''t the only one with a bunch of hot chips in the pipe. According to "sources close to AMD", they may even rival Prescot watt-for-watt.

"While Intel Corporation ran into very serious heat dissipation issues with its NetBurst architecture CPUs and 90nm strained silicon technology, looks like its arch rival AMD will also have some hot chips in future.

Sources close to AMD s partners said the company is going to employ some new power requirements for mainboards designed to support future AMD64 processors, such as Athlon 64 4000+ and the Athlon 64 FX-55, both most probably to be made using 90nm technology. Changes are necessary for mainboards set to come in the second half of 2004."

Saacke Streamlines Customer Service With Intel
December 16th, 2003 - "MUNICH, Germany, Dec. 15, 2003 - Intel Corporation today announced that German precision tool and grinding machine manufacturer Saacke GmbH & Co. has migrated its business-critical Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to Intel Itanium 2 architecture. The move delivers a 20-fold increase in processing power from the previously installed RISC-based solution. It also provides the capability to serve twice as many customers and allows a 33 percent reduction in backup time.

With products distributed in more than 70 countries and subsidiaries in several locations in China and the United States, Saacke''s growth has increased demands on the company''s IT infrastructure. Using ABAS Business Software, the company had a flexible and scaleable software solution, but on the hardware side, the situation was different.

"The RISC-based system we had in place had reached its performance limit, and we just could not accommodate the growing number of users," said Mr. Janietz, head of IT at Saacke. "We needed a more powerful solution. By running the ERP system on Itanium 2 architecture, a medium-sized company such as Saacke has achieved the kind of performance previously reserved only for the largest companies."

Scalability and cost-reduction were also key drivers in the decision to transfer to the Itanium 2 architecture. "We wanted to get away from our proprietary RISC system," Janietz said. "The combination of the Itanium 2 architecture and Linux* allowed us to do this. The result is that we have plenty of headroom in reserve, thanks to the system''s scalability. We''re also reducing our IT costs through the advantages of a standards-based solution."

Saacke''s transition from RISC and Unix to a MAXDATA 9000 4-R based on Itanium 2 architecture running Linux was seamless, requiring one day for server configuration and one day for data transfer before the system went live.

"Intel represents, as does ABAS business software, high performance, state-of-the-art technology, which is critical to building a competitive advantage," Janietz said. "We believe this is the right long-term choice to support company growth."

"Intel works closely with OEMs, software developers, system integrators and end users to ensure that companies of all sizes can realize the benefits of deploying Itanium 2-based solutions in their business," said Tom Garrison, director of enterprise marketing, for Intel''s Europe Middle East and Africa operations. "As Saacke has proven, these benefits include increased productivity, lower operating costs and improved customer satisfaction.""

NVIDIA's GeForce FX 5900 XT GPU
December 16th, 2003 - "AFTER FIELDING a number of lackluster mid-range graphics chips based on its GeForce FX architecture, NVIDIA finally got its act together with the GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. When we reviewed the 5700 Ultra back in October, the card''s performance in DirectX 8-class games was at least as good as--and often much better than--ATI''s Radeon 9600 XT. Unfortunately, the 5700 Ultra stumbled in a number of DirectX 9-class games and synthetic benchmarks, casting a shadow of doubt about how the card might handle next-generation DirectX titles.

Not content to bet the mid-range farm on the 5700 Ultra, NVIDIA has added yet another GeForce FX card to its lineup, the GeForce FX 5900 XT. The 5900 XT will share the same $200 price point as NVIDIA''s existing GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, and both will compete with ATI''s $200 Radeon 9600 XT. This new card''s "XT" moniker suggests NVIDIA wants to knock the Radeon 9600 XT off its pedestal. NVIDIA has even whipped up an answer to ATI''s much-lauded Half-Life 2 bundle to sweeten the 5900 XT.

Can its pseudo-eight-pipe graphics core help elevate the GeForce FX 5900 XT above the competition? There''s only one way to find out."

Shuttle's XPC ST61G4 SFF
December 12th, 2003 - "SHUTTLE''S XPC systems have fast become the standard against which all other small form factor systems are judged. Though they''ve been more conservative when it comes to form factor innovation, Shuttle has aggressively pursued new core-logic chipset technology and has consistently led the rest of the small form factor field when it comes to putting out cubes based on the latest and greatest chipsets.

Given Shuttle''s fetish for fresh chipsets, it''s no surprise that they''ve come up with the XPC SN61G4, a cube built around ATI''s new Radeon 9100 IGP chipset. The 9100 IGP not only supports the latest Pentium 4 processors, it also packs a robust integrated graphics core that makes the nForce2 IGP look like, well, a hobbled GeForce4 MX.

Though it no doubt took some serious engineering effort to squeeze the 9100 IGP into Shuttle''s breadbox form factor, they haven''t forgotten about the rest of the cube. In fact, the ST61G4 may well be Shuttle''s quietest, most powerful, and dare I say attractive small form factor PC yet.

With a swanky new chipset and daring take on its classic XPC form factor, the ST61G4''s prospects look mighty fine. However, ATI''s Radeon 9100 IGP is thus far an unproven design that''s only just starting to trickle onto the market. Will Shuttle''s aggressive pursuit of new chipset technology be the ST61G4''s undoing or make this latest cube a drool-worth addition to the XPC line? Read on to find out."
